LGBT Communities & the 2010 Census:
A Community Presentation by Dr. Gary Gates
Monday, December 7, 2009
6-8 PM
William Way LGBT Community Center
1315 Spruce Street – Philadelphia Room
The 2010 U.S. Census will count same-sex couples for only the 2nd time in our nation’s history. In the 2000 U.S. Census, nearly 1 million people identified themselves as same-sex couples, which provided the first “count” of members of our communities and gave a glimpse of the economic impact of same-sex couples within the larger LGBT community.
Come hear plans for the 2010 Census, learn about how the Census and the American Community Survey uses data on same-sex couples, and find why an accurate count is important to LGBT communities.
Gary Gates serves as the Williams Distinguished Scholar at the Charles R. Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation Law and Public Policy. He co-authored The Gay and Lesbian Atlas and is a recognized expert on the geography and demography of LGBT populations.
