The mission of SafeGuards LGBT Health Resource Center is to enhance the health of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals and communities. We seek to advance the knowledge of health issues affecting these communities and to develop public health programs that promote healthy change on an individual, group, and institutional level. We accomplish these goals through community-based participatory research, collaborative programs, and advocacy.
Since 1989, SafeGuards’ community-based approach to LGBTQ health promotion has recognized social, economic, and other barriers to our communities health. We promote LGBT health and wellness through community outreach and education. We collaborate with other organizations in a range of policy areas and services affecting LGBT health including: workplace equality, police and community safety, at-risk youth, LGBT families and caregivers, mental heatlh, tobacco use, and access to health care and social services.
SafeGuards uses a peer dissemination model of community outreach, providing outreach messages and health information to consumers in areas where social affiliation occurs, or where LGB people are likely to meet. This approach is important to our goal of strengthening community engagement while serving hard-to-reach LGBT populations.
Over the years SafeGuards has hosted many community educational forums reaching thousands of LGBT consumers on a variety of topics such as risk of HIV and STDs from oral sex, hepatitis, crystal meth and club drug use, microbicide research, intimate partner violence, depression among LGBT individuals, screenings for alcohol, and finding a LGBT sensitive health care provider.
